That's another good point.  Did the system let you "easily" cancel the job?
How long after you issued the ENDJOB did the job actually end?  It seems to me
that some system functions won't relinquish control to an ENDJOB until it's
darned good and ready which might well be the end of the job anyway, but you
still lose all the work it did because you canceled it.  But I could be wrong.

We recently went through this with a file containing 152 million records, of
which 107 million are deleted (neither number is a typo).  We attempted to
reorganize the file using RGZPFM, but were forced to cancel the job after
three days.

So we ran an experiment using a CPYF to another library and then another
CPYF back to a copy of the original file with the three logical files
including the members.  This process consumed only seven and a half hours.

In a few weeks, we intend to try this with the real thing.

We are running a dual processor model 640 at V4R1.
