I see no need to be fancy (and depend on all kind of external factors).
Compress the data (CMRDATA), "encrypt" with a shared secret key
by XORing the compressed data starting past the 12-byte header.
This relies on your saying "need some encryption", implying that
NSA-type security is not really needed.
