400 printing over a WAN -- MIDRANGE-L

Hello all. 
Need some advise - integrating a newly purchased company into our network.  
That shop uses an AS/400 with threee printers attached locally thru a twinax 
hub.  All printers are IPDS, mix of hardware types.

Our goal is to run IP only across the WAN.  If this were a 3270 type situation, 
we'd normally put some PU 2 controller out there and Data Link Switch it back 
to corporate.  Alas - this is not 3270.

Any thoughts?  thanks much.
