You are correct -there are not 2 400's in play here- only one.  I need the 
printers in one city to talk to the 400 in another.  The printers are twinax.  
The 400 does have Ethernet.

I'd prefer to LAN connect the printers if possible over installing a 
tokenring/Ethernet remote 5494.  That's messy and another box.  Do they make a 
box to interface a twinax printer to the LAN and can I then point the 400 thru 
his LAN interface to that printer interface box?

     Yes, they will. LPD (line printer daemon) receives the spoolfile
     and directs it to a specified outq on the remote box. At that
     point, the remote AS400 controls the spoolfile and prints it as if
     were generated on the remote box.
