We (Cornerstone Communications) are making money from CISC machines. While
I agree with the statement that CISC shops are not buying a lot of NEW
software, there are still a significant number of them paying for
maintenance. And as long as they are out there in significant numbers, we
will continue to support down to V3R1.

At some point, we will start having "RISC Only" features. That day has not
yet arrived, but it might not be far off either.

Besides, if none of our competitors support V3 or low V4, then all of these
customers become our customers.

Like somebody else said. It is a matter of economics.

Admittedly flawed "survey" methodology, at best. And yes, I don't think (US
and Canadian - don't know about wider international markets) CISC shops are
spending much on any sort of AS/400 products or services, including
training. I think it rather -reinforces- the point that CISC shops are not
spending money on AS/400 stuff.

I disagree, though, that this is a tough issue for software developers. It
is a fairly simple economic decision: Count up the revenue dollars from
CISC shops vs. the expenses of developing for and supporting them. If it is
in the red, drop development and support and focus on newer, profitable
releases.

I'm curious, now: Who is out there making money from CISC shops?

INCLUDING training ? Not knocking what you are saying in ANY WAY Gary, but
this
could also skew your (admitedly non-scientific I'm SURE) survey ? :-) I
don't
envy software vendors wrestling with this problem !
