To setup Netscape Messenger as a POP3 client of the AS/400 (using Messenger
4.61), do the following:

  open up Messenger,
  click on Edit,
  click on Preferences...,
expand Mail & Newsgroups (if it isn't already),
  click on Identity:
Your name = your name (e.g., Todd Kidwell)
Email address = email address for the AS/400 (e.g.,
todd.kidwell@myas400.com)
You can specify a separate email address to receive replies and/or choose a
signature file.
  click Mail Servers
    click Add...
You should see Mail Server Properties
        Server Name = name of AS/400 (e.g., myas400.com). This should be a
name that can be resolved via a host table or DNS to the IP address of your
AS/400. You could probably use the IP address, but I haven't tried it.
Server Type = select POP3 Server
User Name = you user profile on the AS/400 (e.g., kidwell)
      click OK,
  click OK,

At this point you should be all set. You can compose a message and send it, or
click on Get Msg to receive mail. When you click on Get Msg, you should get a
Password Entry Dialog box requesting your password. The password is for your
AS/400 user profile. After you type in your valid password, you will see a
Getting New Messages status box.

If you have any problems, let me know. BTW, this same setup should work for
any e-mail client that supports the POP3 protocol. The setup steps may be a
little different, but the principle is the same.

HTH,

Todd Kidwell (Netstar)
