In your backup program, can you specify an expiration date on your backup that 
will cause the tape to expire on the it will be needed next?  In other words, 
if you have a four week rotation, calculate 28 days into the future and have 
the tape expire on that day.  Using this method will only require you to 
manually initialize new tapes.
