RE: For what purpose is DOS still being used? (Was eRPG)We also still use
DOS in our organization. For us, it's found mainly on the shop floor, where
it's used to host applications that run various different types of equipment
such as torches, saws etc.

Like most other things, DOS has it's place. The shop applications provide
great performance on old 286/386 PC's, and they can rival the '400 in terms
of reliability. There is one PC down there that I happen to know wasn't
rebooted for almost 2 years prior to a scheduled shutdown for Y2K.

For other examples, look no further than your local watering hole. Many
restaurant/lounge systems still rely on DOS for the POS terminals. Most of
the newer ones I've seen appear to be running some variation of *nix, but
DOS is still quite common in the installed base.

I might be sticking my nose where it don't belong, but you can write some
nice little .bat programs in DOS to transfer data to and from the 400. We
use them every day. Works great.
Also, I see about 10 .bat programs being run every time I log on to Windows
NT, if that means anything.
Feel free to ignore this message, or call me an idiot for butting in.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints still uses DOS. The
financial, membership, calendaring, and other systems used in most
congregations are DOS based. Their popular Personal Ancestral File
(Genealogy) program is DOS based. Several of the "Family History"
systems are DOS based.
Is the church anti-technology? No. On the contrary, the church also
has
some of the most modern systems available.
I can only speculate that many of their systems are DOS based because
the
church feels the resources it would take to upgrade to Pentium-Windows
systems would be better spent elsewhere. From personal experience,
I can say the DOS based software is high quality.
