Thank you -- that is how it is already done.  Let's say the operator has 20
tapes in the drive and forgets to initialize one of them -- then we have a
problem.  That is why I would like to include it as part of my CL program to
account for this error -- if it should happen.

I assume you have some type of cartridge loader or stacker, as you said the
backup is on 4 tapes. Why not initialize them when you put them into the
cartridge loader.  Then after all four tapes have been initialized and
unloaded,
just reload them into the tape drive.
