This is the method I use. I wrote a procedure that allows the operator to load the tapes into the 3570 stacker and initialise all tapes in one hit. The operator enters a parameter of how many tapes to initialise and after each tape is initialised (the procedure retrieves the VOLID and initialise it with the same ID) it is unloaded. After all tapes have been processed the operator wanders back after doing whatever else he has been doing while the tapes initialise and reloads them and readies the drive. I considered the approaches others have suggested, but I actually like the extra safety this procedure provides as I have found that it is relatively easy for a 3570 magstar cartridge to have the write protect tag set on accidentally. I haven't found a way around this stopping my save procedures, so doing an initialise pretty much ensures that all tapes will be writable.
