I am not an expert but there are some approaches I might take.

1. GO RESTORE & check the on-line documentation.

I had a case of one member within a file had got accidentally deleted & I did
not know when it happened, so I was digging into past backups to locate one
that had that file, then I only wanted to restore that one member that was
not on-line & not replace the ones that had changed since those backups -
first thing I did was another backup in case I mucked up the restore. I did
muck up the restore, but not fatally.

RESTORE is much more complicated than SAVE, because in SAVE you are simply
backing up everything & making relatively simple decisions about what you
will permit to run at the same time as the SAVE that might interfere with the
process, and how you will verify that you saved everything that you intended
to save, and generally going through the same process daily so you have
memorized the right options, and may even have written some simple programs
to do some of the options for you.

RESTORE involves a jigsaw puzzle - which stuff do we want to restore out of
the whole - do we want to replace what is on-line or do we only want to
restore what is missing & how do we handle links that cross libraries, so as
to restore the physical before the logicals & security, and since we only
need to do this once in a blue moon there is a learning curve just getting up
to speed on how to do it.

2. GO TAPE for menu of various options to dump stuff, display stuff, extract
stuff from tape media, other than the standard restore options.

3. Call my hardware provider & ask about pricing for a temporary use of their
hot site.
We got our 400 from a local outfit that has old copies of old 400 boxes. We
found out about this when discussing compatibility with old off-line media in
selecting upgrade paths. If you have similar hardware support, you can take
the media to one of their systems & restore it ... it won't work there due to
software license keys, but we have done SAVE-21 with selective
RESTORE-excluding operating system when migrating to a new box ... now with
your restore on that other box, you can do a single save or GO BACKUP of the
individual library you want to extract.
