The database routines do use the "human readable contents", including all the special key features like ABSVAL, ALTSEQ, non-preferred sign etc. It's only RPG III that has a problem, and only with READE and the EQ indicator for SETLL. All other keyed I/O is done the way you, a human, would expect.
