I read all the responses to this, but didn't really see a complete answer.  
If you'll check the archives, I warned about this quite some time ago (OS/400 
V3R0M05, to be precise) in dealing with mainframe data.  Back then, the 
AS/400 automatically converted "C" to "F" in RPG, thus causing problems using 
"position to" type functions in subfiles when they required reads against the 
database (don't know if this is still the case).  In mainframe parlance, a 
"C" indicates an unsigned numeric field, just as a "Z" edit code would in 
RPG...
