I concur with the mainframe sign idea. If you were to use this field with the 'C' sign with arithmetic functions, i.e., add, subtract, multiply, divide, the system treats it as a positive number. However, it may well be a whole different animal when it comes to using this field as a key field. The question is whether the compiler (?) sees the key field as a numeric value or if it sees all key fields as a character or hexadecimal value. Numerically, x'123C' equals x'123F', but otherwise they are unequal. You'd probably get a better answer over on the RPG400-L list. I'd guess that Hans Boldt / Barbara Morris would be able to answer this in a second; don't know if they wander over to the MIDRANGE-L list at all. - Dan Bale -----Original Message----- From: Leisk, Andrew [mailto:aleisk@frpaper.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2000 3:54 PM To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' Subject: RE: Reade With a Packed Field Importance: High Trying to remember back in my dinosaur days on a mainframe - I think that "C" is valid instead of "F" as a positive sign for a packed numeric field on a mainframe. Seems to me I ran into a problem with this once about 7 or 8 yrs ago. But darned if I remember any more how we solved it. But "C" is valid. ---------- From: Leland, David[SMTP:dleland@Harter.com] Reply To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2000 1:11 PM To: 'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com' Subject: RE: Reade With a Packed Field Wouldn't that be considered invalid data? I thought packed fields could only end w/ "D" or "F".
