 From the literature I have, it looks like the 2.4GB per 3490E cartridge
assumes a 3:1 compression ratio (when "compression" is on). If there is no
compression, 800MB per cartridge is claimed.
  If the objects in the IFS do not compress well, 4 cartridges would have
somewhere between 3.2GB  and  9.6GB depending on the actual compression
results for the data being saved. 
 I'll bet this is why the tape marketing charts all say "your results may
vary significantly...."
