As someone else said.....ding, ding, ding, ding....we have a winner!

I created an empty file on the target system and the transfer worked fine.
BTW, I also had to specify "BINARY".

Bob,

If you create the file on the target system first (with external
definition) you should be able to FTP it and have it be externally
described when you are done. The other way to do this is to put it in a
save file, transfer it, and then restore it. You can even run the
restore operation from within FTP using RCMD.
