That is  what I am currently doing, it is not a bad method, but there are 
some things like passthrough to other systems, networking issues, system 
tweaking, etc. where you require a dedicated or test environment.

Besides an important reason for me is to get some more hands on with the 
hardware, so I WANT to deal with the PTFs, Maintenance, backups, networking, 
etc. And if I screw something up, (which I most likely will) at least I'm 
not bringing a companys system down.
