Roger,

I just use a program-described file with a record length of 528, and
input specs to name the 528 bytes as a DS (in RPG III) or a field (in
RPG IV). There is no real benefit to using an externally-described
definition for a SAVF since you don't get subfields anyway.

>Again, am I completely going down the wrong track?

For un-deleting records, I'd say Yes. Dave McKenzie released a
freeware utility which uses MI to retrieve the data without the need
to copy to a SAVF. It will display and optionally undelete records
directly from the file, so is fast even with large files. And it
works at security levels 40 or 50.

You can get the source and compiled versions for RISC or CISC at the
News/400 website, under shareware/freeware. Goto
http://www.news400.com/shareware/rtvList.dbm then search for UNDEL.
Download the version(s) you need for your hardware.

I've never (yet) had to use this program, but I like having this kind
of stuff in my toolbox *before* I need it. It seems to work as
advertised in the little I played with it.
