Nick,

Interogating a alpha field as numeric needn't be all that difficult seems to me.
But, how do you intend to "convert" a decimal-positioned "numeric"? For example,
if your alpha field = '1000.50' and (stripped of decimal point) you move the
alpha field into a numeric field defined as 10 0, the resultant numeric could
become a value = "100,050". Conversely, if your alpha field is '100,050' and you
move it into a numeric field defined as 10 2, the resultant numeric could be of
value = "1000.50". How many variations on the decimal positioning are possible?

BTW what version of RPG are you on?

this will include comma's and decimal points, leading or trailing blanks etc.
Also this will have to be converted to a numeric field if it is a valid.
