Nick, Interogating a alpha field as numeric needn't be all that difficult seems to me. But, how do you intend to "convert" a decimal-positioned "numeric"? For example, if your alpha field = '1000.50' and (stripped of decimal point) you move the alpha field into a numeric field defined as 10 0, the resultant numeric could become a value = "100,050". Conversely, if your alpha field is '100,050' and you move it into a numeric field defined as 10 2, the resultant numeric could be of value = "1000.50". How many variations on the decimal positioning are possible? BTW what version of RPG are you on? David Stobberingh > I am looking for a way to validate that an alpha field is a valid numeric, this will include comma's and decimal points, leading or trailing blanks etc. Also this will have to be converted to a numeric field if it is a valid.
