Your company is what I would call a very good example for others to
follow. But what are they doing to cope with the problem of those staff
being poached by other companies, especially those with no training
policy of their own.

With the supply of programmers so tight, it is a lot easier to get into
IT
now.

I work for a consulting firm. The owners of the firm decided a year ago
that
competing for experienced people was not going to provide enough people.
They implemented a program where they would hire a couple people a
month into a training program. These people are brought in and go
through
a few months of training before being placed as entry level programmers.
I
spend one day a week in the office working with these people. The hire
dates are staggered so that there is always one person in the later
stages
of the program when a new person starts so that person can be a resource
for the new person. I find these people to be bright self-starters that
are
very hungry and quite interested in learning new things.
