Wow. What a lot of responses, and when all was said and done I didn't have to feel duncely. Dave's got it about right. Forced to work with split dates. Adding salt to the wound though is that the dates are mmddyy and cc, and must remain that way. One small addendum to your two points Dave: there is a third useful purpose - the project just got extended.
