Thank you for the comments.  It has got to be something else then, perhaps 
related to Visual Age RPG.  I shall have to follow another road.  It feels good 
to at least realize it was not another stupid mistake.

(btw, for those curious: the REMOTE keyword signals a data file on a defined 
server, not the PC.  Usually the defined server is an AS/400.)
