(similar statements confusing GUI and multitasking deleted) GUI or Windows has nothing to do with multi-tasking. in unix you have the control-z to switch between prompts, and you can run jobs in batch, using only a text user interface (TUI). I know of at least half a dozen utilities for plain old DOS that allow you to run multiple programs, even mouse-enabled (GUI) programs at the same time. For the AS/400, I have used PC support for DOS for several years.
