Eric, I have some small amount of experience with a mixed environment of RPG III and RPG IV. I would say that generally the performance and storage requirements are about the same UNLESS you start using named activation groups (ILE) Starting an activation group costs about as much CPU as starting a new job, so you need to be careful there. Also, bind by copy will take up more disk storage than bind by reference does. I am not using named AGs here, except for QILE. Also, we don't have a standard for binding service programs yet, so I have not deployed any into the field (only for my own tool kit.) I would advise you to convert a few of your RPG III programs to RPG IV only for your education. Unless you have exquisite RPG III code, you will not be taking advantage of RPG IV by converting. You will get the best value by writing new code in RPG IV rather than converting old code. If you have experience with C, you will easily get used to prototyped procedures. I feel that these have given me the best value for my time to learn them. There is a poster on RPG400-L who is very advanced compared to me; perhaps he can answer some of your questions better than I can. Bonne chance! Good luck!
