I dunno if it's a Western thing or not. Until recently the idea of a Project Manager at the company I work for was as a lead / only programmer. We've got a new head if IS, so I don't know if the definition's changed yet or not. For most projects, if it's of any size, -managing- the project is a full time job: coordinating various tasks, user testing, equipment deliveries, resolving disputes, resolving programming interface issues, scheduling user training, dictating Change Management procedures... *phew* There's more than enough work to keep a manager -managing- without adding programming, debugging, testing, and the like to the list. If a manager insists that a Project Manager is just a lead programmer, they are NOT thinking clearly about the entire project. Is there another position that handles the administration of the project? Maybe you need a change of title to go with your relocation. --Paul E Musselman PaulMmn@ix.netcom.com >I just relocated to Salt Lake City from Philadelphia. One of the interesting >(to me) changes I've noticed is that out here in the West, they look at >project management as being more of a hands-on coding job. I'm used to working >as a manager, not a coder. And a fine one at that. This has slowed down my >finding projects a bit. > >I'm wondering. What is the perception of the list participants?
