I was a VM/VSE Technical programmer in the mid 80s. We converted to the AS/400, and at first I never thought that these little AS/400 (biggest box was a B60, the B70 had not been announced), would be able to handle our load. We were right, but thank god the usual timing of IT projects crept in and we were delayed about 8 months, while the AS/400s just happened to grow during that time frame. It took me about 6 months to realize that these AS/400s were the best thing since sliced breed. It was evident when the fall came around and we had to change our clocks. On the AS/400 it took 5 seconds, on the VM/VSE machine, we had to regenerate both operating systems VM & VSE to reflect the fact that we were going from +5 to +6 (or whatever it was) time zones from Greenwich mean time. THat took about 5-6 hours to regenerate, bring the systems down, and then back up. What a mess. That to me is a perfect example of the easy of use of the AS/400 over the VM/VSE systems. One of the best things about VM was the ability to run a new version as a Virtual guest. I am looking forward to being able to do the same with V4R4 of OS/400 (as told by Frank Soltis at COMMON). We were a Cobol shop at the time on VSE, and you will find that your COBOL logic moves over at 100%, but there are a few I/O changes that need to be made. These can be relegated to a Jr. Programmer, once the first few have been done and a methodology is in place. All in all, its the best move we did as a company, and the best move I have done for my career. Pete Massiello Will Townsley wrote: > Hi all, > > I am the Director of an IBM VSE data center.
