Will, In a message dated 98-10-23 09:03:15 EDT, you write: > I am the Director of an IBM VSE data center. We have been > operating with VSE (mainframe operating system) for 25 > years. I would like to know if anyone else out there > listening has specifically made the conversion from VSE > to AS/400 or know someone who tried and gave up. <<snip>> I don't have direct experience with VSE conversions, but have seen the aftermath of several that were poorly done. I would strongly suggest getting a well respected consulting firm with experience in this conversion to help you with it (_NOT_ a plug, I'm booked and don't have the required experience). Most mainframer's negative AS/400 experiences have been due to incompetent help setting it up in the first place. Not knowing how to set up jobs, job logs, or trace problems have been the biggest offenses. IMO, CICS/400 is a marketing tool and should be treated as such. Write your /400 applications for the /400, _NOT_ the mainframe. I don't know that the AS/400 will help your "relative marginal growth" situation, and I'm not sure that I understand quite what you mean by it. The AS/400 has grown in complexity lately as well -- ILE, Environment Variables, JAVA, the IFS, exit points, and others are all concepts that were completely foreign to "seasoned" AS/400 professionals at their inception. Good luck, and feel free to write me directly if you have any specific questions... Regards! Dean Asmussen Enterprise Systems Consulting, Inc.
