Just a couple of points on this:

IBM hasn't had a sales force in the field for years....

The DC metro area hardly represents the way the "rest" of the country
thinks... Government and their related suppliers order computers based
on bids, which ain't the way the business world works... As I recall
from a long time ago, unix rules in gov. contracts, not because it's
better, but because it has been around a long time in gov., which makes
about as much sense as to what's going on up your way these days... The
400 will be around in one form or another long after most of the folks
in this group are retired..... it's working on 19 years now, another 19 
is no sweat..
