Actually IBM has discontinued those interlocks. They were required because the units were initially designated as customer setup. Any customer setup machine with more than 500 Watts of total power supply is required to have interlocks preventing the attaching and removal of any cables while power is applied. By removing the customer setup designation the interlocks can be removed. I gave IBM a verbal schelacking at Sound Off at spring COMMON, and was informed within 24 hours of the decision to remove the interlocks. See - Your opinions do count! (Well OK, it was not my doing alone. The decision had already been made.) There is a field fix that will be rolled out to those systems that still have the interlocks in place. (By the way if yours are simply disconnected from the covers you will want to tape them on, they fit very loosly.)
