My current primary client has chosen the "glorified 8-track" (OK, it's
_GREAT_, but the cartridges still look like a darned-expensive 8-track to me!)
as their backup solution -- good given that you can load a rack full and walk
away (and the cleaning cartridge takes care of itself as needed). Out of the
four systems that I deal with regularly (a 310, a 320, a 530, and a 50S --
other boxes are involved), only one has the tape drive physically attached.
The drive is configured as a device on one box, and as a virtual device on the
others. Vary it on for the box you need it on, and it works like a champ (as
long as it's not tied up on one of the others). Advantageous in that you can
get more tape drive for your dollar, a pain in the rear if you need it and
somebody on one of the other boxes has it tied up...

Regards!
