David,
        You pretty much hit the nail on the head.  We use a 3590 tape drive for
our bakup which works really well.  Not only is is super fast, it will
change tapes automatically.  As for paging, I have set up Byteware's
Messenger Plus to alert me of any system abnormalities including Dayend
and Backup.  As for job scheduling, I use the AS/400 scheduler.  I am
currently looking for a 3rd shift operator to watch over everything, and
keep me from getting paged in the middle of the night.  We have our
European locations that need support at 3am so a 3rd shift is
important.  I haven't had much luck finding anyone who can work these
hours AND knows the AS/400.  Good luck.
