Is this a fair thing to say (particularly the "alpha" part)?  If the date 
is documentary/commentary, and no caluclations, sorts, etc. will be needed 
for it, is a person perverted or wierd if s/he uses an alpha storage 
mechanism?

There are probably several reasons for storing date values, that have 
nothing to do with year 2000 compliance.  A decision on how to store any
particular piece of information is not automatically wrong nor perverted
nor wierd simply because it doesn't match what you or I would have done.
