re: the dearth of good CS programs at Amreican universities: One could always try combing the engineering departments. I'm a Computer Engineering graduate of a really big time university, and believe me, 80-90% of my time was spent on techie things, lots of programming and even lots of hardware (which has been VERY handy on several thorny professional problems.) In my case, I just decided that designing the chips/ systems, while possibly more lucrative, was just too %#*$& tedious to do 10-12 hrs/day, 6 days/week. So, I took the "other" route and do software instead. Surely, I can't be the only such person in all the world. Besides, dream on about colleges not having C/S people take Western Civ and whatnot... most college administrators/profs/whatever will tell you (usually with a certain tone of superiority) that "a good college education is more than JOB TRAINING - it is turning out well-rounded citizens" or some such. Not that there's anything wrong with that attitude (heck, I even enjoyed my token Humanities requirement courses), but as you say it sure makes finding qualifed people amongst college grads something of a crap shoot.
