As of V3R2 you can change a physical file in place using CHGPF as long as
you are not deleting a field used in a logical file.  Just specify the name
of the source physical file containing the DDS for the file.  It does
everything you used to have to do manually.

It is beyond me why CHGPF will add a field to a logical file created over a
physical file using the physical file's record format but will die if you
try to delete a field.

I understand this is an SQL compatibility issue.  Once again the "lowest
common denominator" syndrome limits the capabilities of OS/400.
