     It may not be fair, but depending on how many applicants a company has
     (or
     expects) for a position, the requirement for a college
     degree can be considered the easiest way to make the first 'cut'.
     I remember in the early 80's that a major airline here in Chicago might
     get
     a 1000 resumes for an opening.  If 50% had a degree
     and 50% did not, you know which half got tossed.
