I actually got my BS after 7 years in the field. I'd started on it
prior to getting a job as a programmer, had to drop out, and wanted
to finish it just for the satisfaction of doing so. It hasn't helped
me at all.

Heck, I only have a two-year A.A.S. degree. After 7 years of RPG
programming
experience, does a B.S. really mean any more than the other definition of
it
at this point in my career?

John -

I'd just like to know the answer to one question:
Why do so many companies specify a bachelor's degree in CompSci as a job
requirement for a
programming position?

I have not yet met an AS/400 - iSeries - System i (and that's with a
little "i", NOT a big
one..) that has a degree in computer science.

As any good IBM midrange technical professional will attest, a degree in
Computer Science
is totally irrelevant to programming on this platform - we're not
creating
new hardware,
writing compilers, or _any_ kind of bare metal stuff like is taught in
any
Computer
Science curriculum.

Any person with a CompSci degree would be totally bored with the System
i
- on the other
hand, a more reasonable expectation would be having a degree in Computer
Information
Systems.

Inquiring minds would like to know...

I have my suspicions about this kind of job listing, but I won't
elaborate...yet.
