As a very experienced EDI person (did EDI for 13 of my 19 years in the
industry, for automotive), I have to agree that the mapper is of little
concern: a transaction set is a transaction set. I have used Trustedlink since
it was Harbinger, then Premenos, etc.... If I needed to get into a Gentran
shop, I would take 1-2 days to review the manual, play with the package, and
then I'd be off and running. Just because I don't have specific Gentran
experience, doesn't mean that I can't do the job in a Gentran shop. I'd be
willing to bet that any EDI person feels the same way.
Just my 2 cents, again.

Ahhh, finally one I can relate to. I have to admit I'm pretty fortunate,
haven't been out of work since I finished the 19-year plan in college and
started working on an AS/400 in 1991. But I digress. Ron's point is
extremely well taken. The people that are hiring feel some need to state
requirements such as Gentran, or JDE, or whatever else their particular
shop uses, when it's the understanding of what's being done and the
knowledge of the underlying code that really matters. Trust me, I'm in
manufacturing and have been for a few years, and BPCS, MAPICS and PRMS have
very few differences, outside of the garbage code added by the 4GL that
created it (Synon, AS/SET). And as he said, an 850 is a PO and a 997 is an
acknowledgement, no matter who's EDI package it is. And if you can't find
a midrange programmer that can work his way through whatever small
differences there are between those packages, then we're definitely all in
trouble.
