Ahhh, finally one I can relate to. I have to admit I'm pretty fortunate,
haven't been out of work since I finished the 19-year plan in college and
started working on an AS/400 in 1991. But I digress. Ron's point is
extremely well taken. The people that are hiring feel some need to state
requirements such as Gentran, or JDE, or whatever else their particular
shop uses, when it's the understanding of what's being done and the
knowledge of the underlying code that really matters. Trust me, I'm in
manufacturing and have been for a few years, and BPCS, MAPICS and PRMS have
very few differences, outside of the garbage code added by the 4GL that
created it (Synon, AS/SET). And as he said, an 850 is a PO and a 997 is an
acknowledgement, no matter who's EDI package it is. And if you can't find
a midrange programmer that can work his way through whatever small
differences there are between those packages, then we're definitely all in
trouble.

I gotta laugh at this kinda thing. I have been with the 400 since it's
inception, the 38, the 36, the 34, the oh, never mind.......
Gentran, Sap, Ingenium, One World, Muckenfutch and McCormick---whatever, so
this crap is coded in some unitelligible languages that only experience
with the actual rotten, horridly bloated, unusable lines of code somehow is
of extra value? I mean you fixed one MCH1202 error, you kinda got a handle
to fix them all, it is rather algorhythmic, ain't it? Thats how we can sit
here and answer questions on midrange and other forums, from our esteemed
counterparts oversees , where some of the wizards are asking such questions
as 'What is the exact meaning of CHAIN opcode' please insert human
readable code with extensive notation by friday since it is an
emergency.......' A true value added proposition. EDI? Gotta have
experience with set 56, and 52 or whatever, Jesus!!!!! doesn't anyone read
anymore? How long does that take to pick up? Oooooooohhh, scarey, gotta
read a couple chapters in a book. I don't belive that there are that many
nebbishes out there---who got 15 years in or better, can't read a joblog or
do a debug or read a dump----

Jobs go wanting many times because of this idea that there is something so
unique and special about code that only certain forms of codebrain surgeons
can wreak havoc on. It is like Marilyn Chambers has said, 'It's just
another act"

Ron Melby
down in the trenches.
