Gee, maybe it's the military?  A Sergeant Major makes about what I do. 
Then again, there is an inherent risk in that job.  Also, if you don't 
improve yourself and get promoted, you're out of there.  There are no 
privates with 30 years of service.  (Unlike some coders we know.)
