wellll...  sometimes people don't realize what they are saying.  "Oh
yeah, he's great!  He and I used to see which one of us could grab the
most ass in a day."

Also, it does tell a lot about the applicant just by whom he lists as
references.

I still chuckle at one application I got:
1) his bartender
2) his probation officer
3) his girl friend, but don't call her at home because her husband might
answer.

One thing my instructor in college told me is to ask if they would be a good
reference. I would hate to think that people are willing to give bad
references, but I know there are those jerks out there.

It's sort of along the lines of a lawyer asking a question of a witness
- never ask a question to which you do not already know the answer.
If I did that and the person in question still gave me a bad reference,
I'd feel betrayed.  But then I'd move on and do as others have suggested
- ask myself if it was there was truth in what was said and learn from
the experience either way.
