I don't know of an MI solution, but V5R1 has a QMAXSPLF system value that may help. Also, periodically end and re-start the pretty-print job. The spooled file numbers are assigned by job, so starting a new job will start the numbers back at one. If this isn't helpful, try the MIDRANGE-L list.
