As I recall, the QUSLSPL utility can return the internal 'key', to the spooled file, bypassing the spooled number issue. I believe you can then use the spool copy API using the special internal key to get the data out. I have not done this, just remember reading about it, so I could be completely wrong. I would look into replacing the CPYSPLF command with the more flexible API method.
The _pressing_ problem we have here, is that we have a lot of save spooled files with the same name (for example, Invoices), which is causing this four-digit number to "top out" at 9999. We have a utility which takes the spooled file and turns it to ASCII for pretty print, but this utility BOMBS when the high number is reached.
