I don't know of an MI solution, but V5R1 has a QMAXSPLF system value
that
may help.  Also, periodically end and re-start the pretty-print job.
The
spooled file numbers are assigned by job, so starting a new job will
start
the numbers back at one.

If this isn't helpful, try the MIDRANGE-L list.  There are more 'general
knowledge' people over there and a wider audience may get you better
quality
answers.
