Thanks James for the PF to SAVF conversion help.

Something we use here is GZip (GNU Zip) which uses very similar algorithms
to Winzip and runs natively from the AS/400 command line.

It compresses pretty much any object and places the resulting archive into
a specified folder on the AS/400 IFS.

The best part is that it is freeware under the GNU license.

If your as400 is v5r1 (maybe v4r5), you can find 2 qsh commands, compress
and uncompress. I tested them on a savf, compression rate is as high as
with winzip, etc... but result couldn't be read by some pc tools
(powerarchiver)
