The objective is not to 'code to the metal'.
To say that MI is 'just an intermediate language' is really to belittle the
unique strength of the AS/400 architecture that has allowed a smooth
transition from CISC to RISC. As (if?) the AS/400 evolves further it
is at least conceivable that there might be a further change of under-
lying hardware. MI (old and new) is what defines the virtual machine
that *is* the AS/400. Just like Java bytecodes. This is (was?) the
brilliant vision Frank Soltis had when the S/38 was defined.
