We have gone both ways on multiple warehouses. After some aggravating experiences with planning issues (that were mentioned in an earlier posting, and believe me, they can get worse than that!), we opted for the following rules: If all materials in both physical warehouses are being planned through MRP by the same group of planners, we keep them in the same MAPICS warehouse and differentiate them with locations (using the 1st position is an easy way to do so - quick and easy for queries, accounting reports, and such). Then we just TW between warehouses for material movement. If transfer time is an issue, use IWs and RWs for accountability. If one of the warehouses is planned by a separate group of planners, or if you are just using the 2nd warehouse for assembly or distribution, then it makes sense to create a separate warehouse. That gives you a lot of flexibility in how you want to handle planning issues. We do that also, for a couple of specific circumstances.
