Konrad,

check out the latest R7 performance info in SH14412-the R7 technical
planning guide. i think you will find that with the performance work the
lab has done, R7 will not be the performance leap once thought. you will be
able to offload the different "software" servers from the as400 using a new
tool which was being shown in the IBM pavillion at the users conference
called LinkManager. it is easy to move the multiple "software" servers to
other "hardware" servers just with the click of a mouse. want the ejb or
other r7 servers to be moved to linux or intel servers (or even other LPARs
in your as400) in your organization? you can do it easily and offload that
work from your as400. this "distributed" model is outlined on page 29 of
the technical planning guide. you can see that you now only require a 400
CPW box to support 8-15 users. also there is a new "embedded" model (page
31) that actually makes r7 look like r6 to you and me. the ejb for
powerlink (the fat client) can be run locally on the user's desktop and not
require any extra as400 cycles. in this model you can run upto 15 local
users on a 150 CPW machine. the load on the pc is a bit more so a 400MHZ,
384MB machine is recommended-but these have been around a while.

as you can see r7 requirements have been revised, and the news is good.
