Jon,
Thanks for the reply. What you did is exactly what I am hoping to
do!

Subject: RE: AS/400 Upgrade charges

Barb,

We did a similar thing last November. We went from a AS/400 model 500
processor 2142 to a model 270 processor 2248; this dropped us from a P20 to
a P05 but the machine is 3 times faster, has double the memory and double
the DASD. I believe it is the smallest 270 available from IBM.

MAPICS pricing is not based on the processor group but is tied to size of
the machine somehow. Our MAPICS annual maintenance went down considerably.
We saw an immediate reduction in cost for annual maintenance costs of IBM
Hardware, IBM software subscription, ROBOT from Help systems and from
MAPICS within the first 2 months of having the machine. The savings more
than paid for the cost of the "Upgrade?".

The only really work involved with this process was going from v4.4 to v5.1
of OS/400 and making sure we got all of the new license codes installed
properly.

By the way our affiliate had to contact MAPICS to get the new pricing
because the software they use to calculate the new prices did not work when
you are "Downsizing" the system.

Our users are extremely happy with the performance of the new system and the
CEO is still talking about the amount of savings we experienced.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Subject: AS/400 Upgrade charges

Hi all,
I apologize if I am revisiting an old topic, but have searched
through the archives and did not find a definite answer. In the near future
we are looking to put several non-MAPICS applications/files on our AS/400.
It is a 9402-400, 2131, in the P10 processor group, CPW 20.6, memory and
DASD maxed out (don't laugh). Current response time during prime working
hours, running MAPICS only, is fair to poor. I'm afraid that adding these
additional systems is going to bring it to its knees. That being said, and
economic conditions being the way they are, we need to avoid the hefty
MAPICS upgrade charges if we want a new box (we are still on tiered
pricing). Are these upgrade charges processor group based? Is it possible
to stay in the P10 group, avoid the charges and get something with more
oomph? Or better yet, move to the P05 group and lower our incredibly high
ALF's and still increase our CPW? There are no plans to add or change any
our MAPICS applications. Why should have to pay software charges to upgrade
our hardware?

Thanks in advance!
