When I was at Midrange Software, I wrote such a package call the Automated
Buy Card that supported an Approved Vendor List per Item Number. You might
want to contact them to get a trial copy.

Has anyone out there come across a solution that would allow the maintenance

an Approved Vendor List (AVL) by Item Number?

Again, in High Tech industry, it is VERY common (99.999% of the time) to
have
several approved Manufacturers of raw components (Capacitors, Resistors,
IC's,
etc.)

As far as I know, "out of the box" MAPICS allows for only one approved
vendor
per item revision.

In house Mods, 3rd party solutions, ???
