Back in the Dark Ages we ran MAPICS I payroll on a /38. It was crude and
the users complained a lot, but it always worked, and MAPICS always made
sure that it met the legal requirements. John even managed to make it do
direct deposit, no small feat in 1984. ADP was reviewed several times
during those years, but they could never prove that we'd save any money with
them, nor would they promise reliability that would match our actual
experience with MAPICS. Granted John was a techie's techie (we had the /38
microfiche, for example), but even so it's reliability was impressive,
especially considering the /38 did NOT have a UPS, or any disk protection
other than good nightly backups.
